How liability insurance works

A mishap can occur before you know it. Whether you, a family member or a pet is to blame.

Liability cover is voluntary in Switzerland

In Switzerland, liability insurance is generally voluntary, but it’s nevertheless recommended. Because it protects you against the high cost of accidentally causing damage or injury to a third person. Do you keep a dog as a pet? In that case, most cantons in Switzerland will require you to have this type of insurance.

Basic insurance cover

  • Property damage: destruction, damage or loss of property.
  • Personal injury: injury, damage to health or killing of persons.
  • Damage to animals: injury, damage to health or killing of animals.
  • Monetary losses: monetary losses caused by insured personal injury or property damage. For example, if you cause an accident that leaves someone unable to work and facing financial losses.

Add extra protection through supplementary cover

Would you like more protection? We have optional add-ons for when you’re at home and away.

No reduction for gross negligence

Gross negligence means acting irresponsibly or carelessly and failing to exercise due care. For example, if you ride through a red light on your bicycle, causing an accident. If you have the gross negligence option, your benefits won’t be reduced when you make a claim.

Driving third-party motor vehicles

Cover for damage to third-party vehicles that you use only occasionally. These include passenger cars, motorbikes, delivery vans with a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, agricultural vehicles, and motor boats and sailing boats.

Holding a self-employed second job

Insure claims arising from self-employment through which you earn up to CHF 18,000 a year.

Hiring and borrowing of third-party horses

Accident-related damage to horses that you borrow, hire, keep temporarily or ride on behalf of someone else, including their tackle.
